Canada Loses Beijing Olympics Figure Skating Medals Appeal

Russians Also Won't Get Medals

Canadian Figure Skaters Will Not Join the United States and Japan on the Podium

PARIS AP Canadian figure skaters will not join the United States and Japan on the podium at the Beijing Olympics after losing their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Monday.

The Canadians finished fourth in the team event, just one point behind bronze medalist Japan. However, the International Skating Union (ISU) disqualified the Russian team from the event after 15-year-old Kamila Valieva tested positive for a banned substance.

The ISU awarded the gold medal to the United States, the silver medal to Japan, and the bronze medal to Canada. However, the Russians appealed the decision, arguing that Valieva should not have been disqualified because she was a minor and had not intentionally taken the banned substance.

The CAS upheld the ISU's decision, ruling that Valieva had violated anti-doping rules and that the Russian team should be disqualified.

The decision means that the Canadian team will not receive any medals from the team event. It is a disappointing outcome for the Canadians, who had hoped to win their first Olympic medal in figure skating since 2010.
