Vancouver earns first win of the season after a dramatic finish

Whitecaps FC battled back from a 2-0 deficit to force a shootout, which they eventually won 4-2.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC survived a dramatic comeback by the LAFC to claim a 4-2 shootout victory on July 30, 2024, at BC Place Stadium. The Caps earned their first win of the season after a thrilling match that saw LAFC come back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the final minutes of regulation.

The Whitecaps took an early lead in the match when Ryan Gauld scored in the 15th minute. Brian White doubled the lead in the 30th minute, giving the Caps a comfortable 2-0 advantage.

However, LAFC came storming back in the second half. Carlos Vela scored in the 55th minute, and Gareth Bale equalized in the 89th minute, sending the game to extra time.

The Caps eventually won the shootout when LAFC's Eduard Atuesta missed his penalty kick. Maxime Crepeau made the save, and the Caps celebrated their first win of the season.
