André Chassaigne: French Politician and Presidential Candidate

Early Life and Career

André Chassaigne was born on July 2, 1950, in Clermont-Ferrand, Puy-de-Dôme, France. He joined the French Communist Party (PCF) and became a member of the National Assembly in 1997. Since then, he has held various political positions, including Mayor of Ambert from 2001 to 2017.

Presidential Candidacy

In July 2017, the Nouveau Front Populaire, a coalition of left-wing parties, nominated Chassaigne as their candidate for President of the National Assembly. As the candidate of the united left, Chassaigne ran on a platform of social justice and economic equality.

Chassaigne's candidacy was notable for being the first time in over a decade that the Communist Party had nominated a candidate for President of the National Assembly. He emphasized his commitment to the values of the Left and pledged to fight for the interests of the working class.

In the election held on July 19, 2017, Chassaigne was defeated by his opponent, François de Rugy of the La République En Marche! party. However, he received a significant number of votes, showcasing the resilience of the French Communist Party and the support it continues to enjoy among certain segments of the population.
