Thousands Protest In Bratislava

Slovaks Rally Against Corruption, Murder of Journalist

Thousands Protest in Bratislava

Continued Concern Over Impunity

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Thousands of Slovaks rallied in the capital on Thursday to protest government corruption and the unsolved murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak.

The protests were the latest in a series of demonstrations that have gripped Slovakia since Kuciak and his fiancee were found shot to death in their home in February.

Kuciak had been investigating possible corruption ties between politicians and the Italian mafia, and his murder has raised concerns about the state of press freedom and the rule of law in Slovakia.

Prime Minister Robert Fico, who has been accused of corruption and of trying to stifle press freedom, has denied any wrongdoing.

But the protests have continued to grow, and on Thursday, demonstrators filled Bratislava's main square, waving Slovak flags and chanting "Enough is enough."

Conclusion

The protests in Slovakia are a reminder of the importance of press freedom and the rule of law in a democracy. And they are a warning to other leaders who may be tempted to suppress dissent or ignore corruption.
